Quick answer

To clean your glass, metal, or ceramic piece with Formula 420 Cleaner, shake the bottle, pour enough to cover the residue, let it sit for one minute (or longer for tough buildup), then rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Why Formula 420 Cleaner works differently

Unlike general dish soaps or abrasive powders, Formula 420 Cleaner uses exclusive AbrasivAction™ technology that breaks down resin and ash without soaking or scrubbing. This makes it ideal for intricate percolators, tight bends, and hard-to-reach areas where a brush cannot fit.

The cleaner comes in several styles—Original, All Natural, and Plastic/Acrylic—so you must pick the correct version for your material. Using the Original formula on acrylic can cause clouding or cracking, while the Plastic/Acrylic formula may not dissolve heavy resin on glass as effectively.

When to replace vs. reuse the cleaner

Formula 420 Cleaner is designed for single use. Once it turns dark brown or opaque from dissolved resin, its cleaning power is spent. Pouring old solution back into the bottle contaminates the remaining cleaner and reduces its effectiveness. Always discard used solution down the drain and rinse the piece before the next use.

How to use Formula 420 Cleaner step by step

  1. Step 1: Choose the right formula: Select the Original formula for glass, metal, and ceramic. Use the All Natural version if you prefer a plant-based cleaner. Use the Plastic/Acrylic formula only for acrylic or plastic pieces. Using the wrong style can damage the material or fail to clean effectively. Check your piece material before opening the bottle.
  2. Step 2: Shake the bottle well: Shake the Formula 420 Cleaner bottle vigorously for a few seconds. The abrasive particles settle at the bottom, so shaking ensures they are suspended and ready to break down resin. Do not skip shaking—unmixed cleaner cleans poorly.
  3. Step 3: Pour enough to cover residue: Pour the cleaner directly into the piece, covering all resin-coated surfaces. For pipes, plug one end with your thumb and tilt to coat the bowl and downstem. Do not dilute with water yet. Using too little cleaner leaves residue untouched.
  4. Step 4: Let it sit for one minute: Allow the cleaner to work for at least one minute. For heavy buildup, let it sit for 5–10 minutes. Do not scrub—the AbrasivAction™ does the work. Check progress by swirling occasionally. Longer soak is safe for glass but avoid leaving it overnight.
  5. Step 5: Rinse thoroughly with warm water: Pour out the dirty cleaner and rinse the piece under warm running water until all traces of cleaner and loosened residue are gone. Use a pipe cleaner or brush for stubborn spots only after rinsing. Cold water may leave a film; warm water rinses cleaner away better.
  6. Step 6: Dry and store properly: Shake out excess water and let the piece air dry completely on a towel. Store the Formula 420 bottle upright at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and extreme heat. Tighten the cap after each use to prevent evaporation. A damp piece can attract dust; a loose cap weakens the cleaner.
